Shane Riveira

My Jiu-Jitsu career began in 2007 when I joined the American Top Team and began training under the guidance of Carlson Gracie black belt Ricardo Liborio. After winning several white belt tournaments I was awarded my blue belt in April of 2009. Master Liborio was extremely instrumental in equipping me to become a better competitor. In 2009, I was invited to join the U.S National Team of Grappling as I became the "Team Leader" for Team U.S.A. We won the FILA World Grappling Championships that year. In December 2010, Master Liborio awarded me my purple belt and I successfully earned many medals in the competition circuit. 2010 would prove to become a defining year in my Jiu-Jitsu career as I successfully earned my first IBJJF Medal and many more after that. In December of 2013, Master Liborio awarded me my Brown Belt. Shortly after my brown belt promotion I entered my first brown belt tournament at the IBJJF Pan American championship. I competed in two weight classes above my original weight and I made it to the podium in the Super Heavyweight division. On March 31st 2016 Master Liborio bestowed upon me the honor of becoming one of his black belts. Not only was I awarded a black belt, I was awarded with Master Liborio's black belt wrapped around my waist.

Jiu-Jitsu has played a very pivotal role in my life, not only because it is the most influential martial art I have ever practiced, but it has heavily influenced my life forever. I was diagnosed with a benign tumor on my thyroid and had to undergo surgery immediately. I believe through Jiu-Jitsu and the support of my team I persevered. I am back in the gym training harder than ever and I am competing at almost all professional IBJJF tournaments in the world. Jiu-Jitsu has allowed me to become a great coach and Mentor inside and outside of the sport. My leadership skills were the most influenced, because I have been able to break down developing situation and become a better decision-maker. My life and all facets has been enhanced because of Jiu-Jitsu.
