Geo Omori opened the first jiu-jitsu / judo school in Brazil in 1909. He would go on to teach a number of individuals including Luiz França. Later, Mitsuyo Maeda was one of five of the Kodokan's top groundwork (newaza) experts that judo's founder Kano Jigoro sent overseas to demonstrate and spread his art to the world. Maeda had trained first in sumo as a teenager, and after the interest generated by stories about the success of Kodokan Judo at contests with other jujutsu schools that were occurring at the time, became a student of Jigoro Kano. Maeda left Japan in 1904 and visited a number of countries giving "jiu-do" demonstrations and accepting challenges from wrestlers, boxers, savate fighters and various other martial artists before eventually arriving in Brazil on November 14, 1914. 1. GI Jiu Jitsu is practice with the use of a traditional GI ( JUDO OR JIU JISTU UNIFORM)
which give you the possibility grab the GI of your opponent.
2. No Gi is practice without the uniform. You will have to wear shorts and a rash guard. You cannot grab your opponent's clothing when you are practicing NO GI.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art focused on the skill of controlling your opponent in a way that forces them to submit. BJJ promotes the concept that also any person can successfully defend themselves against another, you will be a stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage. The most important you will be taking the fight to the ground, and then applying JOINT LOCKS and chokes to defeat your opponent.
A "gi" can also be called a "kimono." This is the uniform worn when you are practicing BJJ. It consists of a uniform of top and pants.
In the sport of BJJ, the opponents are constantly going for a grip on your opponent's sleeves, lapels, and trousers. Having the gi on your body gives the opportunity to grab ahold of something and helps you to strengthen the muscles, tendons, ligaments, forearms, upper arms, and back
In NOGI grappling or submission practice, each individual will wear athletic clothing like rash guards and shorts. Your position and control is different when there is NOGI to grab a hold of. This forces you to adapt to the various situations. Learning to hold down a slippery and sweaty opponent is far more challenging than holding down someone who is wearing a gi.
